In a decisive push against climate threats, Mai Mala Buni has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to confront the environmental challenges confronting Yobe State, declaring climate action a top priority of his government.
Governor Buni gave the assurance on Monday at the Government House, Damaturu, while receiving the Yobe State Climate Change Policy Document developed under the ACReSAL framework.
Speaking during the presentation, the governor said his administration has already placed strong emphasis on flood control, erosion management, and the fight against desert encroachment, describing them as urgent threats to livelihoods, agriculture, and long-term development in the state.
“Environmental challenges are no longer future risks; they are present realities. This policy document provides a clear roadmap for protecting our people, land, and economy,” Governor Buni stated.
He noted that Yobe, like many frontline states in the Sahel region, must respond with clear policies, sustainable projects, and coordinated action to mitigate the growing impact of climate change.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Chairman of the ACReSAL Steering Committee, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, said the policy document would serve as a strategic guide for managing climate-related risks and strengthening environmental resilience across the state.
According to him, the document aligns Yobe State with national and global climate response frameworks while addressing local realities such as flooding, land degradation, water scarcity, and desertification.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Policy Document Committee, Baba Malam Wali, represented by the Director-General of YOGIS, Dr. Hassan Gana, commended Governor Buni for consistently supporting policies, programmes, and projects aimed at mitigating environmental challenges.
He described the governor’s leadership as forward-looking, noting that environmental sustainability has remained a central pillar of the administration’s development agenda.
With the formal adoption of the ACReSAL Climate Change Policy Document, Yobe State positions itself as a proactive player in Nigeria’s climate resilience drive, signaling that the battle against environmental degradation has moved from rhetoric to structured action.
