Buhari Was Never Boko Haram’s Mediator, Shehu Counters Jonathan’s Claim

Katsina state government

Former presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, has refuted ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim that Boko Haram once nominated Muhammadu Buhari to mediate peace talks with the Federal Government.

In a statement on Friday, Shehu described the assertion as “false and misleading,” stressing that neither the late Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf nor his successor, Abubakar Shekau, ever considered Buhari for such a role.

He recalled that Boko Haram had consistently denounced and threatened Buhari, even targeting his convoy in a 2014 Kaduna bomb attack.

According to Shehu, the rumor stemmed from a 2012 press briefing by a faction led by Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulaziz, which Shekau himself later disowned.

Shehu further noted that Buhari’s then party, the CPC, swiftly dismissed the claim through statements by Engr. Buba Galadima and Rotimi Fashakin, who maintained that Buhari had no links to insurgents and accused Jonathan’s PDP government of politicising insecurity.

“The latest comments are nothing but an attempt to rewrite history ahead of 2027. To win, Dr Jonathan should find a better story to tell Nigerians,” Shehu added.
