President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday officially swore in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The brief ceremony was held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with top government officials and presidential aides in attendance.
Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who recently concluded his tenure as head of the electoral body.
In his remarks, President Tinubu charged the new INEC chairman to uphold transparency, fairness, and integrity in the conduct of elections, stressing that credible polls are the foundation of democracy and good governance.
He further urged Amupitan to deploy his vast experience in law and public service to strengthen electoral reforms and restore public confidence in the commission.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, pledged to justify the trust reposed in him by ensuring credible, technology-driven elections across the country.
The new INEC boss is expected to immediately take charge of preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and begin early groundwork for the 2027 general elections.
