The Borno State Police Command has apprehended a couple involved in the brutal assault of an 11-year-old girl, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, after a viral video exposed their actions in the Pompomari area of Maiduguri.
The incident, which occurred on March 19, 2025, unfolded when Hauwa, a Primary 5 pupil at Bolori Primary School, Federal Low Cost, entered the residence of 33-year-old Muhammad Shetima to pluck mangoes. Enraged, Shetima and his wife, 23-year-old Aishatu Abubakar, subjected the young girl to severe flogging. Shockingly, Aishatu filmed the abuse and shared it on social media.
Public outrage followed, with concerned citizens and civil society organizations, including legal firm Potential Attorneys, petitioning for justice. Their efforts, alongside the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), led to the swift arrest of the couple.
The victim is currently receiving medical care at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and is responding to treatment. Meanwhile, the suspects are in custody at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where investigations are ongoing ahead of their prosecution.
The Borno State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough investigation and a commitment to ensuring justice under the Child Protection Law and the Borno State Penal Code.
For transparency, the Command will continue to provide updates on the case.
