In a major political shake-up in Borno State, former State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Usman Mahdi Badairi, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending almost 30 years of association with the opposition party.
Badairi, a long-time party stalwart, said his decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, loyal supporters and party faithful across Borno State, all of whom, he noted, unanimously endorsed his exit from the PDP.
The resignation was conveyed in a personally signed letter addressed to the PDP State Chairman through the Party Chairman of Marte Local Government Area and the Ward Chairman of Badairi/Ngilewa Ward in Marte LGA.
According to Badairi, his departure was necessitated by persistent intra-party crises, unresolved leadership tussles at both state and national levels, and what he described as a glaring lack of focus within the party.
“I have remained a committed member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, investing my time, energy, resources and even personal property in the struggle,” he said. “Yet, in all these years, the party has never produced a governor in Borno State, denying members the dividends of democracy.”
He lamented that public confidence in the PDP has continued to dwindle, with many members and eligible voters distancing themselves from the party during recent elections due to its prolonged failure to secure political power in the state.
Recalling his service as former State Chairman and as a candidate for Marte, Monguno and Nganzai Federal Constituency, Badairi called on his supporters and other party members to follow his lead and quit the PDP in protest against what he termed deep-seated structural and leadership failures.
Despite his decision, Badairi expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities it afforded him to serve in various capacities, describing his years in the party as eventful but ultimately unfulfilling.
His resignation marks another significant blow to the PDP in Borno State, as the party continues to grapple with internal divisions and waning grassroots support.
