A medical expert and a religious leader have emphasized that inadequate planning for childbearing contributes significantly to financial burdens on families and society.
The Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (UMTH Chapter) in Maiduguri, Dr. Abubakar Ngubdo, highlighted that Borno State experiences high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. He attributed this to the economic hardships and insurgency crises faced by families in the region.
Dr. Abubakar, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, asserted that proper measures by families could enhance the overall healthcare of women and newborns, reducing preventable deaths.
“Borno State has very high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. This is due to insurgency and economic hardship which have impacted families’ purchasing power,” he explained.
He added, “Child spacing is crucial. Ideally, before a woman gets pregnant, the child should be well-planned in terms of health and economic stability. Proper preparation and planning can significantly reduce the economic burden on families.”
Dr. Abubakar elaborated on the expenses associated with childbirth. “From maternity costs to baby kits, drugs, hospital expenses, and naming ceremonies, these expenses can be an additional burden. With the current economic conditions, it is wise to prepare and plan before having a child,” he advised.
Similarly, the State Chairman of JIBWIS, Alhaji Goni Abdu, discussed the intersection of culture, religion, and child spacing at an event organized by the Challenge Initiatives (TCI) in Maiduguri.
He noted that Islam provides clear guidelines for husbands to provide food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities for their families.
“There is no clear prohibition in Sharia or Hadith against spacing childbirth and planning a family. In fact, it is encouraged because, as a husband, you have the responsibility of taking care of your family. The holy book advises marrying if you have the means. Therefore, planning your family is essential,” Alhaji Goni stated.
He further emphasized the importance of financial capability in family planning.
“As a religious leader, it is crucial to plan your family and support them according to your means. You cannot give what you do not have, as it would only add to your burden,” he concluded.
