To enhance transparency and accountability, the Borno State Government, with UNICEF’s support, has completed a comprehensive readiness assessment of its monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system.
Speaking during the dissemination workshop in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Arc. Haladu Garba, Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement (RRR), stated that the initiative aims to improve the tracking and impact measurement of development projects across the state.
He noted that the dissemination workshop convened government officials and NGO representatives to discuss the assessment’s findings in the state.
According to him, the assessment is critical in ensuring project effectiveness and accountability as the state recovers from over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.
“This assessment will enable us to better monitor and evaluate our development efforts,” Garba stated. “It will provide a clear plan to strengthen our capacity and ensure projects deliver tangible results.”
The assessment, conducted by My I.T. Consult Limited with UNICEF’s backing, found Borno State has moderate readiness for a results-based M&E system.
It also highlighted key areas for improvement, including training, governance structures, and data management.
Mubaraq Muhammad, Executive Director of My I.T. Consult Limited, stressed the necessity of a robust M&E system, especially given Borno’s security challenges.
“A strong M&E system is crucial for ensuring resources are used effectively and projects achieve their intended outcomes,” he said.
UNICEF’s Acting Chief of Borno Field Office, Joseph Senissie, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting the state in developing a child-focused M&E system aligned with its development goals.
He called for prioritising the assessment’s recommendations and increasing investment in data and technology to enhance transparency and accountability.
The dissemination of the assessment report is expected to strengthen Borno’s development framework and ensure projects deliver meaningful results for the state’s residents.
