The Borno State Ministry of Water Resources has initiated a temporary water rationing system as it intensifies efforts to repair and maintain key water facilities that were severely damaged by recent floods.
The ongoing repairs, aimed at restoring full water supply across Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and surrounding areas, are part of the Ministry’s emergency response to the devastation caused by the floodwaters.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Engineer Tijjani Alkali Goni, in a recent statement, provided updates on the progress of repairs, revealing that water supply to affected areas will be distributed on a two-day rotational basis.
This interim measure is necessary to ensure equitable distribution of available water during the restoration process. According to the Ministry, the rationing system will remain in effect until the faulty water facilities are fully repaired.
The damage to the water infrastructure has affected thousands of households, leading to an urgent need for swift intervention. Engineers are working around the clock to address the faulty pipelines and restore consistent water flow. The Ministry has also deployed additional resources to speed up the maintenance and ensure minimal disruption to the public.
In an effort to keep residents informed, the Ministry has set up a public feedback system to monitor the situation in affected communities. Commissioner Goni reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering a lasting solution, noting that the state is closely coordinating with national agencies to prevent future disruptions, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
While recognizing the inconveniences caused by the rationing, Commissioner Goni expressed his gratitude to the public for their patience and understanding. He assured residents that the Ministry is prioritizing swift repairs to bring water services back to full capacity and mitigate any further impacts.
