In a bold move to ease the aftermath of the devastating September 10 flood, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched an aggressive emergency water intervention—drilling 50 new boreholes and upgrading 48 others in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
The disaster, which crippled water flow from Alau Dam and plunged thousands into severe water scarcity, prompted the state government to act swiftly. Areas like Gwange, Mafoni, Lamisula, Wulari, and Bulabulin Ngarannam are among the hardest hit, but are now seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
Powered by solar technology, the upgraded boreholes—some over 40 years old—now boast 50-horsepower systems distributing water within a five-kilometre radius. Kasuwan Gwoza, previously cut off, now has a fully solar-powered borehole, restoring hope to residents.
Dr. Mohammed Musa Aliyu, General Manager of RUWASA, confirmed that 25 new boreholes are already operational, with 10 fully delivered in Mafoni alone—half newly constructed, the rest upgraded. Communities are expressing immense relief.
“Before this, we spent hours searching for water. Now, our lives are back on track. Alhamdulillah for Governor Zulum,” said one grateful resident.
With plans for 10 additional ‘ruwan zafi’ boreholes and more upgrades underway, Zulum’s government is turning crisis into resilience—one borehole at a time.
