BORNO 2027: The Governorship Race Heats Up as Top Contenders Emerge

Katsina state government

The political atmosphere in Borno State is gradually becoming charged ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as some heavyweight politicians begin to position themselves for what promises to be a fierce contest. With Governor Babagana Umara Zulum expected to complete his second term by then, attention is shifting to who will step into the shoes of one of the most celebrated governors in Nigeria.

So far, four prominent figures have emerged as likely contenders: Senator Abubakar Kyari, Mele Kyari, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan SAN, and Muktar Aliyu Betara. Each of these men comes with vast experience, influence, and a strong support base, making the race highly competitive and unpredictable.

Abubakar Kyari
Senator Abubakar Kyari, currently the Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is seen as a formidable candidate with deep political roots. A former senator representing Borno North, Kyari is respected for his calm demeanor, strategic thinking, and strong connections both within and outside the state. His tenure in the National Assembly and his present role at the apex of Nigeria’s ruling party give him a unique edge in terms of national influence and grassroots recognition.

Mele Kyari
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), is also rumored to be considering joining the race. Though not a traditional politician, Kyari is known for his technocratic leadership and deep ties to Borno’s elite and power brokers. His entrance into the race would mark a dramatic turn, as his administrative expertise and national prominence could sway voters looking for a results-driven leader to build on Zulum’s legacy.

Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, SAN
Kaka Lawan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and serving senator representing Borno Central, is another top contender with impressive legal and legislative credentials. Known for his eloquence, political savvy, and strong presence in the Senate, Senator Lawan commands significant support among political stakeholders in Borno. His legal background and ability to navigate complex issues may appeal to voters interested in law, justice, and institutional reforms.

Muktar Aliyu Betara
Also in the ring is Muktar Aliyu Betara, a long-serving member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations. Widely regarded as one of the most influential lawmakers from the Northeast, Betara is praised for his grassroots approach, philanthropy, and deep understanding of governance and budgeting. He enjoys strong support from his constituents and has built alliances across the three senatorial zones of Borno.

As the 2027 elections approach, political alignments, endorsements, and internal party dynamics will play crucial roles in determining who emerges as the flagbearer for the major parties, especially the APC, which currently holds sway in the state. The coming months will likely witness more declarations, strategic defections, and realignments as each of these contenders intensifies consultations.

One thing is certain — the race to succeed Governor Zulum has officially begun, and Borno State is set to witness one of its most high-stakes political battles yet.
