BORDER BLOODBATH: One Killed, Another Injured as Lakurawa Bandits Storm Sokoto Cattle Range

Borno State Government

TANGAZA — Terror struck along the Nigeria–Niger border on Thursday night as suspected Lakurawa armed bandits launched a deadly assault on a cattle range on the outskirts of Tangaza in Sokoto State, killing one person and leaving another seriously injured.

The attack, which occurred at about 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 20, saw a large group of heavily armed assailants storm the settlement, firing sporadically and sending residents fleeing for safety.

Security sources confirmed that 30-year-old Yahaya Al-Hassan was fatally shot during the raid, while Bello Muhammad sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg.

Troops from the Army Forward Operating Base, alongside other security agencies, were swiftly deployed to the scene in response to distress calls. However, the attackers reportedly rustled an unspecified number of livestock before retreating into a nearby forest under the cover of darkness.

The deceased and the injured victim were evacuated to the General Hospital Tangaza, where the former was confirmed dead and the latter is receiving treatment.

Military sources disclosed that intensified operations are underway to track down the fleeing bandits and recover the stolen animals.

Joint security teams have also commenced confidence-building patrols across affected communities to reassure residents and forestall further incursions.

The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges confronting border communities in Sokoto State, as authorities vow to tighten surveillance and restore calm in the troubled axis.
