A shocking tragedy has reportedly claimed the lives of over 150 suspected bandits after a boat conveying them capsized in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State.
According to local sources, the ill-fated incident occurred on Saturday evening as the heavily loaded vessel attempted to ferry a large number of armed men across a water body in the area. The boat was said to have suddenly overturned mid-journey, plunging all occupants into the water.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the situation quickly turned fatal, as many of the passengers reportedly lacked basic swimming skills. “Most of them could not stay afloat, leading to massive casualties,” a source disclosed.
Early reports indicate that none of those onboard survived the mishap, although security agencies are yet to issue an official confirmation at the time of filing this report.
If verified, the incident could mark a major setback for bandit groups terrorising parts of the North-West, particularly in North-West Nigeria, where security forces have intensified operations against criminal elements.
