In a region long plagued by insurgency, Borno State is writing a new story—one of resilience, rebirth, and educational transformation.
Speaking exclusively to our reporter, prominent education advocate and activist, Comrade Abubakar Biddeen, has commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and the Commissioner for Education, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, for achieving what many considered impossible: restoring and reforming the education system in the heart of Nigeria’s conflict zone.
This is a silent revolution that deserves national recognition, Biddeen declared. “Governor Zulum and Commissioner Wakilbe have not only rebuilt structures but rebuilt hope across communities.”
Over the past few years, the state has witnessed a remarkable revival in education infrastructure. Several ultra-modern Mega Schools now stand tall in Maiduguri and various local government areas, equipped with ICT centers, science laboratories, modern libraries, and boarding facilities.
These schools are designed to provide a holistic learning environment that meets 21st-century educational standards.
Comrade Biddeen emphasized that the renovation of previously dilapidated schools across the state has also played a vital role in encouraging enrollment and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
“Parents are now more willing to send their children to school because the environment is safe, clean, and motivating,” he said.
Another key achievement under Zulum and Wakilbe’s leadership is tackling the shortage of qualified teachers. Over 1,000 competent teachers have been recruited and trained in modern pedagogical techniques.
The introduction of monitoring and performance evaluation systems ensures that only the best teaching standards are maintained.
“These efforts have already translated into improved WAEC, NECO, and JAMB performance,” Biddeen noted. “That’s a clear indicator that we’re on the right path.”
To further strengthen human capital development, the Borno State Government established vocational training centers that serve as empowerment hubs for youths, women, and persons with disabilities.
These centers offer hands-on training in tailoring, ICT, plumbing, electronics, and agriculture—ensuring that even those outside the conventional classroom can secure livelihoods. “The inclusiveness of these centers is commendable,” Biddeen stressed. “For the first time, the handicapped community in Borno feels seen, valued, and empowered.”
In higher education, the administration has revitalized scholarship programs both local and overseas—focusing on critical sectors such as medicine, engineering, and ICT. Institutions like Borno State University College of Education Waka-Biu Ramat Polytechnic and the College of Health Sciences and Technology, Maiduguri have seen significant upgrades in infrastructure and staffing.
The Zulum administration also initiated critical reforms in the Almajiri and Tsangaya education systems combining Islamic and Western education. Thousands of children have been successfully integrated into the formal education structure.
Comrade Biddeen praised the state’s active partnerships with development agencies such as UNICEF, Save the Children and the World Bank saying, “These collaborations have brought global support to local problems.”
With increased enrollment, better exam performance, and a renewed faith in the school system, Comrade Abubakar Biddeen Well believes Borno’s education revival stands as a model for post-conflict recovery and human development in Nigeria.
