Bashir Ahmed Applauds Buratai’s Court Move, Says Terror Allegations Must Be Proven in Law

Borno State Government

A former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmed, has welcomed the decision of ex–Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd.) to seek judicial redress over what he described as grave and far-reaching allegations bordering on terrorism.

Writing on his X account on January 8, 2026, Ahmed expressed “genuine happiness” that Buratai has taken legal action against a fellow retired officer, Maj. Gen. Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi, demanding ₦1 billion in damages for alleged defamatory statements.

Ahmed noted that the accusations, repeatedly made against the previous administration and its officials, were too serious to be tried in the court of public opinion. “Allegations of such magnitude,” he said, “should never be left to public debate alone.”

According to him, the lawsuit now offers a critical opportunity for the accuser to present credible evidence before a competent court of law, insisting that claims with national security implications must be tested by due process.

Observers say the case could set an important precedent on accountability, free speech and the limits of public commentary on security matters in Nigeria.
