At least 16 vigilantes have been killed and dozens of residents abducted in a series of attacks by armed bandits in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attacks reportedly took place between November 9 and 13, 2025, targeting multiple communities including Dutsen Magaji, Magama, Borin‑Aiki, and Gidan Ruwa. In the first raid, 22 residents were kidnapped in Dutsen Magaji. In a second attack in Magama village, bandits surrounded a mosque during early morning prayers, abducting over 20 more residents.
During the second raid, vigilantes pursuing the attackers walked into an ambush, resulting in 13 vigilante deaths. Local officials described the vigilantes as heroes who were defending their communities.
Several villages have been deserted as residents fled to safer locations, including Mashegu town, Kawo‑Mashegu, and Manigi. The Mashegu LGA chairman’s press secretary, Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, confirmed the deaths of the vigilantes and praised their bravery. The Niger State Police, through spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun, said they are still verifying the full details of the incidents.
The attacks have heightened fears of insecurity in Niger State, with local communities calling for increased protection and security measures.
