At least two hunters were killed on Monday evening after suspected Lakurawa armed bandits ambushed a hunting party in Kadidda Forest, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in yet another deadly attack highlighting the worsening insecurity in the North-West.
Zagazola Makama gathered from the Sokoto State Police Command that the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on February 3, when a group of hunters ventured into the forest for what was described as a hunting exhibition.
Security sources said the hunters were taken by surprise as the assailants, who were said to be in large numbers and armed with sophisticated weapons, launched a close-range ambush on the group.
“The bandits opened fire on the hunters at close range, killing two instantly, while others escaped into the bush and later the attack at the Tangaza Divisional Police Headquarters,” the sources disclosed.
One of the victims was identified as Nura Usman, 30, from Magonho Village, while the identity of the second deceased victim, also male, is yet to be formally confirmed.
Following the report, troops from a nearby Army Forward Operating Base (FOB), alongside other security agencies, were swiftly mobilised to the area. However, the attackers had already fled before the arrival of troops from Operation DANSAN YANMA.
The bodies of the deceased hunters were evacuated from the forest and deposited at a hospital in Tangaza, as security forces intensified patrols and launched a coordinated manhunt across the forest and surrounding communities.
Residents of Tangaza expressed renewed fears over safety in forested areas, calling for sustained military presence and proactive intelligence-led operations to stem repeated attacks linked to armed bandit groups operating along the Sokoto–Zamfara axis.
Security authorities say investigations are ongoing, while efforts have been stepped up to track down the fleeing attackers and prevent further violence in the area.
