In a dramatic twist to ongoing security efforts, several notorious bandit commanders operating in Katsina State have reportedly surrendered to authorities — but with a bold condition: they will not relinquish their weapons.
The unexpected development unfolded over the weekend in a quiet meeting with security agencies and local leaders. The bandit leaders, whose reign of terror once gripped parts of the state, declared their willingness to embrace peace but argued that laying down their arms entirely would leave them vulnerable to rival factions and lingering threats.
“We want peace, but we must protect ourselves,” one of the commanders reportedly said during the dialogue. “Disarming completely means suicide.”
The Katsina State Government has yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the security circle confirmed the delicate negotiations. Analysts warn that allowing armed non-state actors to retain weapons poses serious risks to long-term stability.
Locals remain cautiously hopeful. “We want peace more than anything,” said a resident of Jibia, one of the hardest-hit areas. “But peace must come with justice and accountability.”
As discussions continue, the state stands at a crossroads — between pacifying repentant warlords and enforcing total disarmament in the quest for lasting peace.
