Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has lauded Nigeria’s national statement at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing it as both “inspiring and sobering” in charting the country’s path in a changing global order.
Speaking after attending the Assembly in New York, Bago praised the message delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that it captured Nigeria’s priorities while affirming the critical role of ECOWAS and the African Union in driving peace, development, and justice.
“The appeal for a new financial architecture aligns strongly with our New Niger Vision,” the Governor said, tying Nigeria’s call for reforms in global economic governance to Niger State’s domestic agenda.
He stressed that West Africa’s mineral wealth and agricultural potential, coupled with frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), must translate into deeper economic integration.
“Niger State, by design of nature, falls within this belt of opportunity. We fully support the emphasis on local industrialization because it reinforces the aspirations of millions across Niger State, Nigeria, and West Africa who seek fairer opportunities in global trade,” he explained.
Governor Bago further described Nigeria’s UNGA statement as a “sub-regional call to action,” insisting that Niger State would continue to align its policies in agriculture, climate resilience, and security with this broader vision.
“As Governor of Niger State, I am convinced that our local initiatives must complement the wider agenda. Sub-regional bodies like ECOWAS and continental frameworks like the AU are Nigeria’s natural partners in turning diplomacy into tangible benefits for our citizens,” he affirmed.
He concluded that Nigeria’s strong voice at the UN reaffirms its leadership role in West Africa and underscores its determination to translate multilateral commitments into practical gains for the region.
