Residents of Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, have showered Governor Babagana Umara Zulum with gifts of onion, watermelon, and smoked fish in appreciation of his bold decision to resettle the town three years ago.
The gesture, accompanied by an award of public service, was presented to the governor by community representatives who praised his September 2020 initiative that reopened Baga and restored their means of livelihood.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Abba Aji Alhaji Aji said:
“Your Excellency, we sincerely express our gratitude for your bold initiative to reopen Baga. In the past, we survived only on handouts in IDP camps, but now we live in dignity—farming, fishing, and working to sustain ourselves. These farm produce are direct from our farms as a token of appreciation for your effort.”
The community stressed that the resettlement has not only restored their homes but also given them financial independence, marking a significant departure from life in displacement camps.
Governor Zulum, visibly moved by the gesture, thanked the resilient people of Baga for their commitment to rebuilding their lives and contributing to Borno’s development.
