The Social Democratic Party SDP is reportedly set to receive a wave of high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, following the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, SaharaReporters has learned.
According to sources, several former officials from the Buhari administration are also in talks to align with the SDP, fueling speculations of a major political realignment ahead of 2027. El-Rufai’s move is said to have sparked renewed interest in the party as an alternative platform for opposition forces.
While none of the rumored defectors have made official announcements, political analysts suggest that growing dissatisfaction within their current parties and the search for a formidable coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be driving the shift.
With Atiku and Obi both having contested against President Tinibu in 2023, and Osinbajo’s strained ties with the APC post-Buhari, the SDP could emerge as a new power bloc. If confirmed, this wave of defections could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
