No fewer than 121, 000 women and girls were reached with Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in Adamawa communities under the Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All Phase III (ASWA III project).
Aisha Isa Yusuf, Desk Officer – ASWA III Project, Adamawa Rural Water Sanitation and Hygiene (ADRUWASSA) disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists at the end of a field trip visit to implementing Local Government Areas, Ganye and Shelleng.
She said the project is for three years implemented by the Adamawa government supported by Government of Netherlands and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).
Yusuf said, the project has promoted accessible water and sanitation for women and girls as well as ensuring that facilities are designed inclusive, safe, private and hygienic for both female and male.
According to her, the project also reduces school absentees particularly among girls because of menstrual periods.
She said the success was recorded within one year of implementation.
According to her, 75 per cent of the women were in WASH decision making process in their respected communities.
She further explained that now more women were toilet business owners, they sell building materials for the toilet business to address problems of open defecation and hygiene promotion.
She said, women were also leading local NGOs and they were key actors in decision making as well as producing hygiene kits among others.

UNICEF Bauchi field office also explained that before the ASWA project women were less than 15 per cent but now up to 75 per cent as members of WASHCOMs and in decision making process.
She said, the women’s leadership leading processes were doing well in taking decisions that concern their respected communities
Michael appreciated the effort of ADRUWASA over the success recorded within one year of implementation.
“Because of the effort of ADRUWASA and the LGAs WASH units we have women who are chair Lady of the WASHCOMS.
“And they are taking decisions and being respected for ensuring issues of WASH are being implemented accordingly”, she said.
