The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), Usmanu Danfodio University (UDUS) and Sokoto State University (SSU) chapters, have urged Federal and Sokoto State Governments to reposition varsities.
The two bodies made the call in a joint press conference, address by UDUS Chapter Chairman, Prof. Nurudeen Mustapha in Sokoto.
The union expressed dismayed on the dilapidated conditions of infrastructures as well as poor lecturers’ situations in the institutions.
They stressed the need for the federal and state government to reconstitute the governing councils an appointed legible persons with academic backgrounds to facilitate more progress.
”Governing council plays a pivotal role in decision-making including staff recruitment, approval of staff promotion, financial matters, students’ admission and convocation among others,” unions stated.
The ASUU also called on federal and state government to settle Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), being owed thier members which have accumulated for many academic sessions.
The unions further expressed dismayed over Federal Governments refusal to implement agreement reached in the past on institutions infrastructural developments and other concerns on systems upgrades.
They called for increased fundings, payment of backlog withheld salaries, increased wages and ensure steady promotion especially on professorial cadres.
” We urge the state government to hasten the clearance of outstanding union and cooperative deductions as well as check-off dues which are still domiciled in state ministry of finance.
”With the enactment of salary increment by the Presidential Committee on Salaries, which approved salary increment for tertiary institutions’ staff, Professors are to get 35% rise, while other staff are to enjoy 25% increment effective January 2023.
”We urged Sokoto state government to implement the pay rise alongside implementation of the agreed N35,000 wage award which was implemented by the federal government following the removal of fuel subsidy,” the unions pleaded.
The unions further called on the state government to complete the university staff quarters project abandoned for about 11 years, in spite of the fact that students still reside in the hostels, the quarters remained unoccupied and inhabited by reptiles
