The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike after reaching a temporary understanding with the Federal Government, giving authorities a one-month window to meet its key demands.

The decision followed an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on October 21–22, 2025, where members reviewed the progress of discussions with the government.

According to ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union decided to suspend the strike to allow room for dialogue, though it warned that failure by the government to honour its promises within four weeks would result in the immediate resumption of industrial action.

“We are giving the government a one-month grace period to finalise the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and implement all outstanding issues, including earned allowances and university revitalisation funds,” Osodeke said.

He noted that the strike was intended to remind the government of its unfulfilled commitments to the education sector, especially in improving lecturers’ welfare and addressing infrastructure decay across public universities.

The Federal Government, through its negotiation committee, expressed optimism that the latest dialogue would yield lasting solutions to the recurring crisis between both parties.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the government to take ASUU’s warning seriously, cautioning that any breach of the current truce could trigger a broader industrial showdown.

Students across the country have welcomed the suspension, expressing relief and hope for a stable academic calendar, though many remain skeptical about the government’s commitment to resolving the matter permanently.
