Residents of Damaturu have been urged not to panic as the military prepares to carry out a controlled demolition exercise at the cantonment.
The Headquarters Sector 2 of the Operation HADIN KAI in Damaturu has announced plans to demolish unserviceable ammunition within the Damaturu Military Cantonment from March 14 to March 15, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Sector 2, Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Kaita, the military said the exercise would commence daily at 8:00 a.m.
According to the statement, the demolition is a routine military safety procedure aimed at safely disposing of expired and unserviceable ammunition stored within the cantonment.
“The Headquarters Sector 2 Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Damaturu, will conduct a demolition exercise involving the disposal of unserviceable ammunition at the Damaturu Military Cantonment from 14 to 15 March 2026,” the statement said.
The command also appealed to journalists and media organisations to help disseminate information about the exercise in order to avoid unnecessary alarm among members of the public.
Residents of Damaturu and neighbouring communities were specifically advised not to panic if they hear loud explosions or gunshots during the exercise period.
The statement explained that such sounds would be part of routine demolition activities carried out by military personnel to safely neutralise obsolete ammunition.
The army emphasised that the exercise forms part of standard operational procedures designed to ensure the safety of personnel and civilians while maintaining the operational efficiency of military formations in the North-East.
Sector 2 of Operation HADIN KAI reassured the public that all necessary safety measures would be strictly observed throughout the demolition process.
Authorities further called for cooperation and understanding from residents as the exercise is carried out within the designated military facility.
