The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has attained a two-thirds majority in the Nigerian Senate following the defection of Senator Samaila Dahuwa Kaila from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Senator Kaila, who represents Bauchi North Senatorial District, officially announced his defection on Tuesday during plenary in Abuja through a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter, the Bauchi lawmaker attributed his decision to ongoing internal crises within the PDP in Bauchi State and the lack of cohesive leadership. He said his move to the APC was motivated by the need to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration and align with the party’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” for national development.
With Kaila’s defection, the APC now holds 73 out of 109 seats in the Senate, giving it the constitutional two-thirds majority required to pass key legislative decisions and potentially override presidential vetoes without major opposition.
Political analysts say the development further strengthens the APC’s dominance in the upper chamber and could influence the passage of critical bills, as well as the confirmation of federal appointments in the coming months.
The defection also reflects the shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties continue to battle internal divisions across various states.
