APC Retains Zoning Formula Ahead of 2026 Convention

Borno State Government

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reaffirmed that its existing zoning arrangement for National Working Committee (NWC) positions will remain unchanged as preparations gather momentum for the party’s 2026 National Convention.

The decision, announced in a statement issued from the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, is aimed at ensuring continuity, fairness, and internal stability within the party ahead of crucial internal elections that will shape its leadership structure.

The statement, signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, clarified that the zoning structure earlier published in the party’s 2026 Schedule of Nationwide Congresses, National Convention and Related Activities remains fully operational and binding on all aspirants seeking national offices.

According to the party, the existing arrangement distributes National Working Committee positions among states within the country’s geo-political zones in order to maintain balance and inclusivity in the party’s leadership.

“The existing zoning arrangement for National Working Committee positions across states within the geo-political zones remains valid and applicable to the upcoming National Convention,” the statement read.

Party leaders noted that the clarification became necessary following increasing interest by aspirants preparing to contest for various NWC positions.

The APC leadership stressed that strict adherence to the zoning formula will help avoid disputes and confusion during the nomination process.

Under the directive, aspirants are expected to carefully study the zoning arrangement before purchasing and submitting their Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.

“Accordingly, aspirants are advised to be STRICTLY GUIDED by the existing zoning arrangement,” the statement further emphasized.

The National Working Committee is the highest administrative organ of the party responsible for day-to-day management, policy coordination and implementation of decisions taken by the party’s National Executive Committee.

Political observers say the APC’s decision to maintain the zoning structure reflects a deliberate effort to sustain internal cohesion at a time when political activities are gradually intensifying ahead of future national contests.

The ruling party has in recent years relied on zoning arrangements to manage regional expectations and balance power among the six geo-political zones, a strategy widely viewed as critical in maintaining unity within large political parties in Nigeria.

By reaffirming the formula ahead of the convention, the APC leadership appears determined to prevent internal friction and ensure that the leadership transition process proceeds smoothly.

Preparations for the 2026 National Convention are already underway, with party organs across the country expected to participate in a series of congresses and consultations leading up to the major gathering where new national officers will be elected.

Party insiders believe the early clarification on zoning will provide certainty for aspirants and streamline the nomination process, reducing the likelihood of disputes that could distract the party from its broader political agenda.

The APC leadership reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent and orderly convention, urging party members nationwide to cooperate with the guidelines laid down for the exercise.
