A coalition of 22 human rights organisations, led by Amnesty International, has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the Federal Government’s refusal to comply with a court order directing the payment of ₦90 million compensation to Gloria Okolie, a young woman wrongfully detained by security agencies.
Okolie, who was arrested in 2021 and unlawfully held for months over alleged links to outlawed groups, was later freed after a Federal High Court declared her detention illegal and ordered the government to compensate her. However, nearly two years after the judgment, the compensation remains unpaid.
In their petition, the groups condemned what they described as a blatant disregard for the rule of law and a “disturbing pattern of human rights violations.” They urged President Tinubu to intervene immediately to ensure justice is served and to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to upholding human rights and judicial authority.
The petitioners warned that continued refusal to obey the court order undermines public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system and signals impunity within government institutions.
