Department of Opthalmology (Eye) of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano will screen commercial drivers on glaucoma during this year World Glaucoma Week scheduled on Thursday 10th March 2022 at Nai’bawa Motor Park,Kano.
According to the statement issued by the Head of Opthalmology Department Dr Sadiq Hassan disclosed that the choiced of commercial drivers for this year free screening was as a result of the increase in the number of glaucoma cases among the commercial drivers and the dangers/ risks associated with the sudden blackout.
He said that as part of Global Community, Department of Opthalmology of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital with support from the management of the hospital has taken it as part of it’s corporate social responsibility to mark this International week inorder to impact directly to the community.
Dr Hajara A Kawu of the Publicity Sub Committee of the Department said that Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness which is second to cataract Worldwide.
She described glaucoma as symptomless but progressive leading to irreversible blindness as well as referred it as “silent thief of sight”.
She acknowledged the contribution of the media especially in Kano towards the creation of awareness to the general public on glaucoma throughout the week of the commemoration .
It should be note that this year World Glaucoma Week started from Sunday 6th to Saturday 12 March 2022.
