Uyo, Akwa Ibom State — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Monday joined nationwide commemorations marking 70 years of women in the Nigeria Police Force, rolling out activities that celebrated courage, service, and the expanding role of female officers in modern policing.
To kick off the anniversary, policewomen of the Command staged a symbolic road walk through major streets of Uyo, a display of unity, strength, and resilience that has defined women’s involvement in the Force since 1955. The walk, which drew public admiration along its route, also served as a fitness exercise and a platform for engagement with the community.
In a gesture rich with emotion and respect, serving female officers later paid an outreach visit to retired policewomen, honouring those whose pioneering efforts paved the way for today’s achievements in gender inclusion within the Nigeria Police Force. Among those visited were ACP Ini Akpabio (Rtd), ACP Elizabeth Mfon (Rtd), and SP Rachel Esin (Rtd), who warmly received the delegation.
The retired officers described the visit as a profound act of recognition and solidarity, reflecting the bond that links generations of policewomen. They urged today’s officers to maintain discipline, professionalism, and dedication in upholding the values of the Force.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, paid glowing tribute to the women of the Command, acknowledging their critical roles in intelligence gathering, investigations, community policing, administration, and operational deployments. He noted that the 70-year journey of women in the Nigeria Police Force is “a story of courage, sacrifice, excellence, and unrelenting commitment to national security.”
CP Azare reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening gender balance, welfare, and career progression for female personnel, highlighting that women now occupy top-tier positions — including Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and Heads of Units — demonstrating the evolving inclusiveness of the institution.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command extended hearty congratulations to all serving and retired policewomen on this landmark anniversary, applauding their invaluable contributions to peace, safety, and nation-building.
