The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, has cautioned Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the state against operating under the unauthorized name “Akwa Ibom Civil Society Forum.”
Issuing the warning during a meeting with CSO leaders at the Command Headquarters in Uyo on Thursday, October 30, 2025, CP Azare described the use of the nomenclature as illegal and misleading, stressing that it falsely suggests an official umbrella body representing all civil society groups in the state.
He ordered all organizations using the title to immediately desist from doing so, emphasizing that such actions could breach the law and cause public misunderstanding.
The Police Commissioner urged all CSOs to operate within the confines of the law and avoid activities capable of threatening peace and order in Akwa Ibom.
The meeting was attended by several civil society leaders, including Franklyn Isong, Director of the Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN); Comrade Tijah Bolton-Akpan, Executive Director of Policy Alert; Comrade Elkanah Oluyori; Dr. Ini Adiakpan, immediate past Commissioner for Women Affairs; and other representatives of various advocacy groups.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, LLB, ANIPR, who signed the statement, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law, order, and constructive engagement with civil society actors in the state.
