The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rolled out a fresh wave of enforcement actions as Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, on Tuesday issued decisive directives aimed at tightening discipline within the Force and safeguarding public order across the state.
At a strategic meeting with Senior Police Officers in Uyo, the Commissioner expressed grave concern over the growing disregard for the Inspector-General of Police’s ban on unauthorized VIP escorts. He ordered the immediate arrest of any policeman found escorting private individuals, unapproved politicians, or VIPs, warning that such officers will be disarmed, tried in orderly room proceedings, and duly sanctioned.
He stressed that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers will be held accountable for the conduct of their men.
CP Azare also renewed enforcement of the Akwa Ibom Government’s ban on masquerade activities, which he said have led to recurring disturbances, street violence, and attacks on innocent residents. He instructed Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Units to ensure strict compliance, adding that any officer found negligent or compromising will face disciplinary action.
Turning to the rising trend of fake news and misinformation, particularly on social media, the Commissioner condemned its potential to spark fear and destabilize the state’s hard-earned peace. He directed officers to intensify community engagement, monitor emerging threats, and prosecute individuals or groups involved in deliberate fabrication and circulation of falsehood.
In response to ongoing challenges of cultism, armed robbery, and gang activities, CP Azare announced rigorous stop-and-search operations, intelligence-driven raids on black spots, and sustained surveillance of suspected criminal hideouts. He emphasized that all operations must remain professional, lawful, and devoid of harassment, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights while confronting crime.
Reassuring residents, CP Azare described Akwa Ibom as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states and urged officers to maintain the highest standards of discipline, vigilance, and professionalism. He called on members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities, pledging continued partnership with security agencies to uphold safety across the state.
Meanwhile, the Command confirmed that one David Effiong, who was allegedly on the streets in full masquerade regalia disturbing public peace, has been arrested and is being processed for court. Also charged to court are Lexis Christopher, Stephen Okwen, and Miss Favour Emenyi, age 15, a student of Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, for their alleged involvement in fabricating and circulating fake news.
The Police Command assured that all suspects will face justice in accordance with the law.
