Akwa Ibom State Police Command has neutralized a suspected notorious armed robbery gang leader, Imoh Gavin Akpan, following a late-night gun battle in Ikot Ekpene.
The incident occurred on August 9, 2025, around 11:00 p.m., when operatives, acting on Akpan’s lead while in custody, stormed a hideout in Mbiaso village believed to be the gang’s armory. The raid quickly turned violent as the team came under heavy fire from gang members.
During the exchange, Akpan attempted to flee but was struck by a police bullet. He was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
Recovered from the scene were a locally made shotgun, two expended cartridges, and one live cartridge. Police say the hunt is on for the remaining gang members still at large.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John assured residents that the command remains relentless in its crackdown on violent crime in the state.
