The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has scored major breakthroughs in its ongoing offensive against criminal activities across the state, arresting suspected cultists, a vehicle thief, and a burglar in separate sting operations carried out in Ibesikpo and Uyo.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives on Sunday night, July 14, swooped on Ikot Ambon village and arrested two suspected members of the Vikings cult group—Goodwill Nyong Ekwere (26) and Obon Asukwo Udom (33), both natives of Nung Ukana village. Recovered from the suspects were a locally made double-barrel gun, two live cartridges, suspected Indian hemp, and ₦200 cash.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are active members of the notorious cult gang. The police have launched a manhunt for other fleeing members.
In a related development, on Tuesday, July 15, at about 6:50 a.m., officers arrested Solomon Anthony John, a native of Nsit Ubium LGA, over the theft of a Mercedes Benz truck (Plate No: UWN 84 XD). The truck, reported stolen earlier that morning, was promptly traced and recovered by detectives following actionable leads.
Meanwhile, Uyo residents woke up to another act of bravery by the police. At about 5:30 a.m., following a distress call from Itiam Bus Stop along Oron Road, police operatives disrupted a suspected burglary in progress. The gang fled on sighting the patrol team, but Gift Orji Ogbuji (24) was apprehended after a hot pursuit. Recovered from him were a stolen Samsung split-unit air conditioner and a petrol dispensing machine, both believed to have been snatched during a previous raid.
All suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, while efforts are intensified to capture other accomplices and recover more stolen property.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Command, through its spokesperson DSP Timfon John, urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the police remain resolute in flushing out criminal elements from the state.
“Our men are on ground and our intelligence network is active. Criminals have no hiding place in Akwa Ibom,” the PPRO emphasized.
