Akwa Ibom Police Burst Car Theft Gang, Recover Stolen Car, Military Gear

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has busted a notorious car theft syndicate, arresting six key suspects and recovering a stolen vehicle alongside several incriminating items, including fake military accessories and falsified documents.

The breakthrough came after the arrest of Otoabasi George Ime, 42, of Use Abat Village in Ibiono Ibom LGA, who was nabbed with a stolen vehicle on July 27, 2025. His confession led to a wider clampdown by police operatives on July 30 at about 4:30 PM, resulting in the arrest of: Uwem Okon Umoh – the syndicate’s lead fabricator, Umoh Joseph Essien – mechanic, Ukpong Jeremiah Udo – electrician, Uchenna Peter Ihekandu – suspected buyer and Peter Madu Abuchi – syndicate’s money handler.

Items recovered from the gang include: Nine different car number plates, Four yards of military camouflage with two face caps, A FRSC reflective jacket and cap and A file containing fake vehicle documents.

All suspects confessed to stealing nine vehicles in total, as police investigations continue to track down more stolen cars and uncover any operational weapons.

Commending the operation, Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, praised the officers’ efforts and assured the public of the Command’s dedication to rooting out criminal elements and protecting lives and property in the state.

The Akwa Ibom Police vow that this is just the beginning in the war against organized car theft.
