In a swift and courageous operation, operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Marine Police Command successfully repelled a sea pirate attack along the Oron/Calabar waterways, recovering a speedboat and several items from the criminals.
According to a press release issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the incident occurred on May 10 at about 12:06 PM during a routine search and rescue operation. A distress call alerted the Marine Police to an ongoing assault by seven armed pirates aboard a speedboat, attacking unsuspecting travelers in the area.
Without hesitation, the Officer-in-Charge of the Marine Unit led a rapid response team to the scene. Upon arrival, the pirates opened fire on the operatives, sparking a fierce gun battle. Overpowered by the police’s superior firepower, the criminals—some believed to have sustained gunshot wounds—fled into a shallow creek, abandoning their boat and makeshift camp.
A follow-up raid on the pirates’ hideout led to the recovery of a W23 speedboat with a 200HP Yamaha engine, a 15HP Yamaha engine, dismantled engine parts, and various personal and suspicious items, including weapons, charms, and identity documents.
Among the recovered items were: A Dane gun, K2 ammunition (two live rounds and two empty shells),A WAEC ID card bearing the name Patrick Edet Effiong and An improvised toolbox, standing fan, generator, and suspected charms,Personal items such as wristwatch, photographs, and a handbag with tablets
The police have launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects, as efforts to curb maritime crime in the region continue.
“This operation is a testament to our readiness and commitment to rid Akwa Ibom waterways of criminal elements,” DSP John stated.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
