The African Initiative for Journalism and Media (AfroMedia) has condemned what it calls systematic crimes by the Israeli occupation against journalists and civilians in Gaza since October 7, 2023, accusing Israel of seeking to silence the truth and conceal crimes against the Palestinian people.
Citing reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), AfroMedia said over 240 journalists have been killed in recent months, with dozens more injured or arrested — making Gaza the most dangerous place for journalists in the 21st century.
The group highlighted the killings of journalists including Anas Al-Sharif, Hossam Shabat, Ismail Abu Hatab, and Yahya Sobeih, calling the attacks a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a full-fledged war crime.
AfroMedia urged the United Nations to immediately condemn the killings, launch an urgent investigation — including through the International Criminal Court — and ensure independent international media have access to the Strip to prevent the “monopolization of the media narrative.”
It stressed that defending journalists is defending truth, justice, and the future generations’ right to knowledge, warning that continued silence from the global community will only embolden further violations.
