In a powerful gesture of continental pride and solidarity, the Pan-African media and journalism initiative AfroMedia has extended its warmest congratulations to Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris on his appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the AU Mission in New York.
In a statement released by AfroMedia’s founder, anthropological researcher Hassan Ghazaly, the appointment was described as “a crowning moment in Africa’s diplomatic journey and a bold reaffirmation of Egyptian diplomacy’s credibility, reach, and continental leadership.”
Ghazaly lauded the selection of Ambassador Idris as a testament to his “decades-long diplomatic excellence and deep-rooted experience in multilateral diplomacy, particularly in the core areas of peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa.”
He further emphasized that Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration has long played a frontline role in championing African liberation movements, dating back to the days when Cairo served as a conduit for revolutionary leaders to bring their nations’ voices to the UN. “It is this same legacy that Ambassador Idris now carries forward, as he takes on the mantle of African representation on the world’s most critical multilateral stage,” Ghazaly said.
The appointment also comes at a symbolic moment — the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, a global institution Egypt helped found. Ghazaly noted this timing underscores the depth of Egypt’s continued commitment to global peace and African advancement.
Ambassador Idris brings with him an enviable résumé: former Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Permanent Representative to the African Union. He currently serves on the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Independent High-Level Advisory Board, to which he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General in 2024.
Ghazaly hailed this new chapter as “a strategic milestone that reaffirms Cairo’s role in promoting synergy between the African Union and the United Nations, and in projecting Africa’s voice with clarity and conviction on the global stage.”
As part of its celebration, AfroMedia reiterated its mission under the banner “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa.” The initiative, established in February 2021 under the Global Solidarity Network, is committed to strengthening African media collaboration, building journalistic capacity, and reshaping Africa’s global narrative.
