In a poignant moment of recognition and appreciation, Umaru Yakubu Kirawa, the dedicated News Central Correspondent, was honored with the Outstanding Humanitarian Reporter award by AFP war photographer, Audu Ali Marte.
Daily Trust’s Former Bureau Chief of North East Nigeria, Uthman Abubakar Stated this in the NUJ Maiduguri Press Center, During the presentation of the award to Umaru Kirawa.
Uthman Said “Mallan Umaru Yakubu Kirawa is a very brilliant and talented television journalist covering the multifaceted challenges in the northeast region, which has been affected by a lot of insecurity and a lot of other humanitarian crises.”
He noted that Umaru Yakubu Kirawa’s humanitarian feelings were exceptional, and very enviable humanitarian feelings, especially during the terror crises when he delved into humanitarian services he stepped out of his journalist duties responsibilities to help people out of humanitarian services, especially during the bomb explosions in Gwoza.
He further explained that the AFP Photographer, Audu Ali Marte deemed it fit, he snapped Umaru Yakubu Kirawa unaware of rendering such services to victims of a bomb explosion and other terror activities and because of this, The AFP Photographer Audu Ali Marte deemed it fit to present this award to Umaru Yakubu Kirawa.
The picture was captured after the victims of the bomb explosions were brought to the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri. The insurgent blew up multiple explosive devices on 29/ 06/2024, which resulted in the deaths of more than 25 people leaving hundreds injured.
Among hundreds of people who attended the occasion were the Reuters Reporters Ahmed Kingimi, Atiku Galadima of the Nigerian Tribune, and many other dignitaries
Kirawa while briefing journalists shortly after the event said
“I dedicate this award to all the journalists covering war and humanitarian crises in Northern Nigeria, it made me very proud to be a journalist.”
