The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has conferred its Best Agricultural Empowerment Governor of the Year award on Mai Mala Buni, applauding his bold and unprecedented agricultural intervention programme for the 2025/2026 farming season.

The prestigious recognition was presented in Damaturu in acknowledgment of Governor Buni’s sweeping reforms and hands-on investments that have repositioned agriculture as the backbone of Yobe State’s economy. AFAN said the governor’s policies have not only boosted food production but also restored confidence among farmers across the state.

According to the association, the Buni administration’s intervention—covering timely distribution of improved seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, mechanised equipment, irrigation support and extension services—has transformed subsistence farming into a productive, market-driven enterprise.

“Governor Buni has demonstrated uncommon political will in empowering farmers at scale,” AFAN officials said. “His 2025/2026 agricultural package is one of the most comprehensive interventions witnessed in recent times, and its impact is already evident in increased yields and renewed farmer participation.”

Speaking at the presentation, AFAN noted that Yobe’s agricultural landscape has witnessed a steady revival despite security and climate challenges, attributing the gains to targeted policies, inclusive farmer engagement and strategic partnerships championed by the state government.

In his response, Governor Buni dedicated the award to Yobe farmers, describing them as the “true heroes” of the state’s development drive. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to food security, youth participation in agribusiness and sustained support for rural livelihoods.

With the AFAN honour, observers say Yobe State has further cemented its growing reputation as an emerging hub of agricultural resilience and innovation in the North-East, driven by policies that put farmers first and productivity at the centre of governance.
