Governor Dr Umar Dikko Radda Commissions Routine Immunization Centre and Distributes Motorcycles to Strengthen Primary Healthcare.
On 30th September, 2024, n a landmark move to enhance healthcare services and improve child health in Katsina State, the Executive Governor, His Excellency Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, CON, has flagged off the disbursement of over ₦4 billion to more than 800,000 women whose children have completed routine immunization, with provisions for those set to enroll later.
This initiative, launched in collaboration with the international NGO, New Incentives – All Babies Are Equal, underscores the state’s commitment to fostering a healthier future for its children by encouraging life-saving vaccinations.
The historic disbursement was marked by the official commissioning of the newly constructed Routine Immunization Coordinating Centre at the State Primary Healthcare Agency (SPHCA) headquarters in Katsina.
The center, which was built to enhance the management and coordination of immunization activities, is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that vaccines and other healthcare services reach even the most remote areas of the state.
Boosting Healthcare Access with New Infrastructure and Resources
As part of the day’s achievements, Governor Radda also handed over 163 motorcycles to healthcare workers, aimed at facilitating routine immunization and other essential primary healthcare services.
These motorcycles will enable healthcare providers to reach rural and hard-to-access communities, ensuring that no child is left behind in receiving vaccinations and other critical healthcare interventions. The initiative is part of a broader health systems strengthening program supported by international development partners.
In addition, the Governor commissioned an ultra-modern incinerator to safely manage medical waste, further enhancing the state’s capacity for safe and effective healthcare service delivery.
The commissioning of these facilities is a significant step towards improving healthcare infrastructure, particularly in maternal and child health.
Governor Radda’s Vision for Sustainable Healthcare Development.
During 
his address, Governor Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare, emphasizing the importance of routine immunization in preventing childhood diseases and reducing child mortality. “Our partnership with international development partners and NGOs reflects our dedication to ensuring that healthcare services are accessible and sustainable.
The distribution of motorcycles is just one step in a comprehensive effort to reach all communities in Katsina, especially those in remote areas,” Governor Radda stated.
The Governor further appealed to parents and caregivers across the state to take part in the ongoing polio immunization campaign, which targets over three million children under the age of five. By focusing on immunization, the administration is working to safeguard future generations from preventable diseases.
Expanding Primary Healthcare Facilities Across Katsina
Under Governor Radda’s leadership, Katsina State has embarked on an ambitious upgrade and renovation program of over 102 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) across the state. In his remarks, the Governor revealed plans to elevate four additional PHCs to the status of general hospitals, a strategic move designed to expand access to advanced medical services for the state’s growing population.
“We are committed to ensuring that every resident of Katsina has access to high-quality healthcare, no matter where they live. By upgrading our primary health centers and building new facilities, we are creating a healthcare system that works for everyone,” Governor Radda said.
Calls for Policy Support and Healthcare Worker Strengthening
Dr. Shamsuddeen Yahaya, Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, seized the opportunity to highlight the need for a replacement policy for healthcare workers in the state. With an increasing number of staff retiring, there is an urgent need to address the growing gap in the healthcare workforce. He also called for an upward review of allowances for casual workers in both the state and local governments, recognizing their critical role in maintaining the health sector.
The State Commissioner of Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, praised Governor Radda’s visionary leadership, acknowledging that the strategic direction of the administration has laid the foundation for a more robust and resilient healthcare system.
He noted that the government’s focus on health sector reforms would not only address current challenges but also secure the future of healthcare delivery in the state.
