Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transforming the education sector, especially the Tsangaya Islamic education system. Speaking at the commissioning of the Community Islamic College in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, Zulum outlined his strategic plan to merge traditional Islamic learning with modern subjects like science and technology.
The newly inaugurated college is part of a broader initiative to establish 16 higher Islamic colleges across Borno, with each local government area set to have one institution. These colleges are designed to equip Tsangaya learners with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s world, blending religious education with modern academic disciplines.
In addition to Islamic education, Zulum emphasized the importance of digital literacy. He commissioned the state’s 12th ICT center and reiterated his goal of establishing one ICT center in every local government area. These centers will train young people in software development and other digital skills, aimed at fostering self-reliance and boosting employment opportunities.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s substantial investment in teachers’ welfare.
He discussed ongoing projects to build housing for educators, with teachers’ quarters already completed in several areas and more set to be included in the 2025 budget.
Zulum assured that by the first quarter of 2025, all qualified teachers would be placed on the correct salary scale and grade level, following their upgrade training.
In addition to these educational initiatives, Zulum commissioned two government lodges in Kwaya Kusar and Briyel. These projects are part of a larger effort to strengthen governance through improved infrastructure at the grassroots level.
Concluding his remarks, Governor Zulum emphasized that these initiatives are integral to a comprehensive 25-year development plan. The plan aims to deliver inclusive, equitable education and sustainable infrastructure across Borno State.
