The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Bola Tinibu’s government to urgently review its economic policies, which it claims are causing widespread hardship across the country.

In a statement marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba described the current situation as the worst Nigerians have ever experienced, citing skyrocketing petrol prices and the naira’s sharp depreciation since Tinibu’s administration began on May 29, 2023.

The opposition party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of imposing “emasculating policies” that have eroded the fundamental freedoms of citizens. It urged Nigerians to stand firm and resist the emerging “totalitarianism” they claim is being forced on the nation.

“The independence of a nation lies in the respect for the rule of law and the rights of its people, not just in ceremonial parades,” Ologunagba said, condemning the government for policies that “stifle freedom” and plunge citizens into economic despair.

PDP is calling for an immediate reduction in fuel prices and stronger action to stabilize the naira, warning that failure to do so would further deepen the suffering of Nigerians.

The party implored President Tinibu to “listen to the heartbeat of Nigerians” and channel resources toward improving the lives of the people.

“Nigerians are hurting,” the PDP stressed, urging the administration to act swiftly to address the ongoing economic crisis.
