Residents of Matuzgi in Zamfara State’s Talata Mafara Local Government Area staged a fierce resistance against a deadly bandit attack, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 attackers.

The coordinated effort by local vigilantes and community members surprised the heavily armed bandits, who had blocked a crucial bridge leading into the town. The residents, forewarned of the impending assault, laid a successful ambush, engaging the bandits in a prolonged firefight.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed that eight bodies had been recovered so far, with the actual toll suspected to be much higher. “We are still searching the bush for more bodies,” said ASP Yazid Abubakar, the Police spokesperson.

In the aftermath, reports from neighboring communities indicate that the bandits, affiliated with the notorious warlord Kachalla Jummo Smally, were seen retrieving the bodies of their fallen comrades. Local sources suggest that the casualty figure could be as high as 35, with additional skirmishes reported in the nearby Magamin Diddi area, where 10 more bandits were killed.

As banditry continues to plague Zamfara State, the heroic stand by Matuzgi’s residents serves as a powerful reminder of the region’s resilience amid ongoing security challenges.
