The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has breathed new life into Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital, with the installation of solar-powered streetlights in key areas such as Polo, Jiddari, Dikwa Lowcost, Mogolis, and Old GRA.
During a recent inspection of the new streetlights and ongoing drainage clearance in Maiduguri and Jere, NEDC Managing Director Goni Alkali emphasized that these initiatives are designed to improve security and stimulate economic growth.
Alkali highlighted the transformation of once-dark streets into vibrant areas where residents and businesses now benefit from increased safety. He noted, “The once-dark streets of Maiduguri are now lively with activity, allowing residents to move freely and conduct business after dark. This improvement is a significant boost for the local economy and enhances the overall quality of life.
In addition to the streetlight installations, Alkali announced an ambitious drainage project that will see one million meters of drainage systems cleared across Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe states. This effort aims to create jobs and promote healthier living conditions.
“We are tackling global warming and flood risks directly. In Maiduguri and Jere alone, we are clearing 300,000 meters of drainage systems in areas like Gwange, Bulumkutu, Numeri Korongoso, Lawan Bukar, and Shehuri,” Alkali said.
He also noted that new drains are being constructed to ensure proper water flow and prevent the development of informal settlements.
Alkali urged residents to cooperate by avoiding the disposal of waste in drainage systems to prevent blockages and potential flooding.
This initiative is part of NEDC’s broader effort to rebuild and enhance critical infrastructure in a region long affected by insurgency and conflict. Alkali reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving living conditions and supporting the region’s recovery and growth.
Local resident Mala Gana expressed gratitude, stating, “This development is a significant step forward. We can now move around freely at night without the fear of attacks or robberies.”
