The Russian government, through its embassy in Nigeria, has affirmed Nigerians’ right to protest but emphasized that Moscow has no interest in interfering with the governance of the West African nation.This clarification came in response to recent protests where some demonstrators displayed Russian flags.
The embassy noted reports and circulating videos showing #EndBadGovernance protesters in northern states carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has observed media reports and digital content featuring protesters in northern Nigeria with Russian flags and pro-Russia slogans,” the embassy stated on Monday.It stressed, “The Russian Federation and its officials are not involved in or coordinating these activities.
“Videos widely shared on social media depict numerous protesters in northern Nigeria displaying Russian flags and expressing pro-Kremlin sentiments. This phenomenon has ignited a debate among Nigerians, with many expressing concerns about the presence of Russian symbols in the protests.
These concerns are compounded by allegations of Kremlin interference in West African countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which border northern Nigeria and have recently seen military juntas forming alliances with Moscow.
“Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries, including Nigeria,” the Russian government reiterated.
“The display of Russian flags by some protesters is a personal choice and does not represent any official stance of the Russian government.
“The embassy concluded by underscoring its respect for Nigerian democracy and the importance of peaceful demonstrations within the bounds of Nigerian law.
“However, should these protests lead to disruptions or acts of violence, we unequivocally condemn them,” it added.
