As Nigeria braces for the lean season starting in June, a staggering 15.6 million children are set to face hunger, a 25% increase from last year, according to a new Save the Children analysis.

The crisis, driven by escalating kidnappings, conflict, and soaring food prices, threatens almost one in six children across the country.

Cadre Harmonisé report reveals that nearly 32 million Nigerians will struggle with crisis-level hunger between June and August without urgent food and cash assistance.

Farmers’ lives and livelihoods are under siege, particularly in northern regions where violent attacks have disrupted food production and local markets.

“In Borno, Yobe, Katsina, and Zamfara, one in three children faces severe hunger,” said Duncan Harvey, Save the Children’s Country Director for Nigeria.

“Urgent action is needed to address this escalating crisis and protect vulnerable children from starvation.

“The humanitarian organization calls for immediate interventions to bolster food production, distribution, and resilience against climate change impacts.

Without decisive action, Nigeria’s food crisis will only worsen, leaving millions more children at risk.
