NSA Wades Into Cleric Abdul’aziz, Bauchi Police Command’s Security Impasse

Sequel to the interceding by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu with emphasis on peaceful co-existence, the Bauchi State Police Command has now suspended declaration of a wanted person Bauchi based renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Idris Abdul’aziz.

Sheikh Idris Abdul’aziz was on 5th February, 2024, the Bauchi State Police.Command declared Sheikh Idris Abdul’aziz Dutsen Tanshi wanted for.contempt of court, which action the command now categorically said has been suspended.

“Such action is hereby suspended. However, today on 8th April, 2024, Commissioner of Police Bauchi State Command CP Auwal Musa Mohammad, in his effort and dedication to promoting peaceful coexistence and harmonious relations among the figures in the state, spearheaded a peace pact between Malam Idriss Abdulaziz and the Government of Bauchi State at the Police State headquarters”

A statement by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil explained that the peace pact was signed and witnessed by the Director, Department of State Security Services (DSS), the Commandant Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Bauchi state.

“The Commissioner of Police as the Chairman of the Security and Allied Agency in Bauchi State, resolved to ensure that the communication gap that was identified as the causative agent among others responsible for deteriorating the relationship between the parties would be addressed without hesitation”.

CP Auwal Mohammed expressed his unequivocal appreciation to the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for honouring the call of NSA and other relevant stakeholders for the peace accord and maintained that the written commitment that was signed would be judiciously observed by the parties concerned.

Malam Idris Abdulaziz Dutsen Tanshi should understand that while he enjoys the right to freedom of speech, he should not use the pulpit as a platform to insult or make derogatory and abusive statements against preachers/clerics.

According to him, the cleric should strive to foster an atmosphere of peace and harmony within the community through his preaching, regardless of differences in opinion or religious beliefs, as well as the need to respects constituted authority henceforth

The commissioner in the statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Mohammed, expressed confidence that the peace accord marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation and understanding in Bauchi state.

Sheikh Idris Abdul’aziz has been on a self-imposed extile to an unknown destination after the security operatives in Bauchi at a latter day surrounded his house following his declaration as a wanted person by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Ebgetokun.

“Police authority in a special Gazette Bulletin said that his declaration as a wanted person was issued from the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) which urged that anyone with information, saw him or knew where he was hiding should report to the police authority”.

The Gazette said, “State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) No 2 refers this Belletin and given details of rewards for the arrest of Imam Dr. Idris Abdul’aziz, aged 63 years, while his last address is Dutsen Tanshi, Bauchi.

“If seen, arrest and handover to the nearest police station or to the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police, criminal investigation department, Bauchi State Command. A handsome reward await any person (s) with information leading to his arrest”, it further stated.

It could also be recalled that an Upper Shari’a Court 1 sitting in Bauchi has ordered for a bench warrant to the renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dr. Idris Abdul’aziz Dutsen Tanshi following his refusal to appear before the court to continue his case on inciting public disturbance against him.
