DEVASTATION RETURNS: Several Homes Destroyed, One Injured as Floods Ravage Niger State Communities Again

Katsina state government

Tragedy struck parts of Niger State once more as torrential rains triggered yet another round of flooding, leaving several houses destroyed and one person injured in its wake.

The latest incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, affected multiple communities, with residents recounting terrifying moments as water surged through homes, washing away property and livelihoods.

Local authorities confirmed that at least one person sustained injuries during the chaos, while dozens have been displaced, seeking refuge in nearby schools and religious centers.

This marks the second major flooding incident in recent weeks, raising alarm over the worsening environmental crisis in the state. Emergency responders have been deployed, but residents say more support is urgently needed.

“The rain started around midnight, and within hours, our homes were underwater,” said Halima Usman, a mother of four whose house was completely submerged. “We need help. We can’t keep rebuilding every time it rains.”

Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) officials have assured affected families of immediate relief materials and a comprehensive damage assessment, while urging residents in flood-prone areas to relocate.

As climate change continues to fuel extreme weather, the recurring floods are exposing the fragility of infrastructure and the urgent need for long-term mitigation strategies across vulnerable regions.
