Security operatives under Operation Hadin Kai have rearrested a notorious jailbreaker and suspected vandal in Jere Local Government Area, putting an end to his short-lived freedom.
The suspect, 32-year-old Bagoni Tujja, widely known by his alias Awana, was among the inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri during the 2024 flood disaster. He was awaiting trial on rape charges before the chaotic jailbreak.
According to intelligence obtained by counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, Tujja’s luck ran out when he was caught red-handed around 12:30 p.m. on June 12, 2025, by a vigilant member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) under Sector 2 in Jere.
The fugitive was apprehended while vandalising a borehole pumping machine in Kasuwan Rakuma—a vital community asset owned by one Alhaji Gudusu.
Preliminary investigations linked the suspect not only to the jailbreak but also to suspected cases of local infrastructure sabotage.
Security authorities have confirmed that the suspect will be handed back to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action, as efforts continue to crack down on escapees and restore order across Borno communities.
The arrest marks another success in the joint efforts of Operation Hadin Kai and local security outfits to curb criminal activities and rein in escaped felons.
