…Says NASS Must Act Now to Save Democracy
In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over alleged constitutional breaches and contract violations surrounding the controversial Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary on Friday, the group accused President Tinubu of “unilaterally awarding a multi-trillion naira contract without due process, legislative oversight, or environmental clearance.”
“We cannot sit idly by while a project of such magnitude is shrouded in secrecy and impunity. Nigeria is not a monarchy,” the statement read.
Afenifere’s explosive allegation cites grave concerns over alleged disregard for procurement laws, displacement of thousands without compensation, and “a clear case of conflict of interest,” hinting at ties between the contractors and power brokers within the presidency.
The group says the National Assembly must “rise to the occasion, initiate an inquiry, and begin impeachment proceedings if necessary.”
“If the National Assembly fails to act, history will remember them as complicit in the desecration of our Constitution,” the group warned.
The call has sparked furious debate across the country, with legal experts, civil society groups, and opposition parties weighing in. While the presidency is yet to issue an official response, sources within Aso Rock describe the move as “a politically motivated distraction.”
